Moon is a Harsh Mistress (by Robert Heinlein) Panel at Karl Hess Club January 19, 2009.
A panel including Paul Gibbons and Terry Brussel-Gibbons gave an impromptu presentation playing characters from Robert Heinlein's Moon Is a Harsh Mistress and responding to questions ranging from politics to group marriage. Moon is a Harsh Mistress, known as the Libertarian Manifesto presents us with a penal colony on Luna many of whose inmates have served their terms or were born there and should be considered free citizens. They are still being treated as subjects of a tyrannical “warden”. This helps incite a rebellion lead by a computer programmer (the Russian accented Mannie played by Paul—with the accent, a lady political activist, a professor born on earth who believes in a unique brand of personal freedom, and a sentient computer. Due to its prison colony beginnings, there is a serious imbalance between men and women leading to its unusual marriage customs. These include many triads consisting of two men and one woman, one girl being attended by a group of young men, the multigenerational more sex balanced Line marriage which Mannie is part of in this story, and the many others possible in a situation where one's personal relationships are not regulated by the government.
Professor De La Paz comes up with all sorts of ideas he hopes to implement in the new government such as having one house of congress which makes laws and one that does nothing but repeal them, electing representatives to congress based on one's interests or careers rather than one's location and many other roads to freedom...
What is the Karl Hess Club?
Founded by Samuel E. Konkin III as a libertarian sci-fi literary salon in 1994, the club's name honors Karl Hess, the late Goldwater speechwriter ("Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice; moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue.") who later supported the Black Panthers and the Libertarian Party.
The KHC's monthly guest speakers extend beyond libertarians, having included Christian homeschoolers, neo-pagans for group marriage, hemp activists, NRA reps, Marxist publishers, porn stars, Objectivists, and tax avoidance lawyers. And while regular attendees come from many fields, libertarian scribes arrive in abundance, including:
* J. Neil Schulman, scripter for the New Twilight Zone (Profile in Silver) and author of The Frame of the Century (suggesting OJ's innocence),
* Brad Linaweaver (Sliders: The Classic Episodes, Moon of Ice),
* Victor Koman (The Jehovah Contract -- under option to Hollywood),
* John DeChancie (Other States of Being, Witchblade: Talons),
* "Anarchist" playwright Ben Pleasants, and
* Thomas M. Sipos (Vampire Nation)
